Rewarding is effective for many commands, especially obedience commands. It is usually training that will include food or that is associated with getting food. The basic idea is to reward for the proper command response.

Leash/Collar discipline is when you use a leash and collar to train commands and correct behavior. The degree of correction can be very hard to a mild leash prompt. These actions are quick and immediate. A constant nagging on the leash and collar will send out a mixed and ineffective correction and they will get confused.

Clicker Training is when one uses a clicking device when a command is performed. Clicking is usually done at proper stages in a command. For example, teaching the sit command and the dog is starting to crouch in back, click. These are small positive movements that the clicker is reinforcing. Treats may also be incorporated into the clicking technique. With a click you can catch a cute behavior such as a bow, or head tilt, whenever you notice them and without confusing your companion.

Puppies respond to any one of the techniques above, whichever you feel most comfortable with. A puppy will thrive in a structured environment. Remember, puppies have energy but for short spurts. Their rest and your patience is a key to happy healthy puppy. If commands are learned and rewarded properly, then all commands taught to your puppy will be with him as an adult.
