First, lets understand why the raw food diet could work.

When you look closely at a dogs teeth , you will notice that they come together in a scissors like action, indication of a raw food diet. Dogs, like their wild dog teethpredecessors, wolves, have fangs for grabbing and puncturing, incisors for nibbling, premolars for tearing, and molars for crushing bone. Unlike herbivores which only have molars that are used for grinding food and mashing grasses, leaves and other vegetable matter, canine teeth are more for slashing, cutting and tearing. This means their primary food is fresh raw meat.

In fact until about 60 years ago, they survived quite nicely on their own foraging and table scraps from their owners. Of course that was when the world was mostly an agricultural economy. As humans became more citified, a more convenient way to feed our pets evolved. First it was canned meats and then later dry foods emerged as complete meals, easy to store and easy to prepare. And for years we have been told not to feed our pets table scraps because they contain too much fat. Canines need the fat and the meat (raw is best) to attain optimum health and fitness, and build robust immune systems.

Because we are now faced with an obesity epidemic, and human type illnesses among our pets, many people have begun to look for another approach. Since a dogs consumption of raw food seems to be more natural many people are exploring its possible benefits. It has recently been gaining in popularity to feed this diet rather than kibble, probably because of the internet and the stream of information it provides to help us to make a quality decision to feed raw.

There is a lot more detail to understand with the raw food diet, such as what types of raw food , portions to give, should I give supplements , etc.

We will provide additional information on these details and expect to even get some breed specific selections to help you. Not all dogs will like the same foods. Some experimentation is needed, and patience.

As a result of dog health problems there is a definite trend toward finding real, natural, holistic, raw food of human quality. About the same as it used to be back a few decades ago.

Please remember to NOT make drastic changes in their diets; add things gradually so they have time to adjust.
